State leaders invited to make Geelong a priority

Friday, 26th June 2026

With five months until the 2026 Victorian election, we’re asking all sides of state politics to prioritise Greater Geelong.

Council has sent invitations to the Premier, Opposition Leader, and relevant ministers to visit our region and see firsthand the difference their funding commitment would make.

On behalf of our growing community, council has identified priority projects for government and candidates to support and fund.

Our  2026 Priority Projects [ PDF, 14.37 MB] [ PDF, 14.37 MB] were developed in partnership with neighbouring councils and local committees and are aligned with state policies to deliver economic growth, jobs, housing support, connectivity and wellbeing.

The “hallmark” priorities for high investment and high reward are:

  • CENTRAL GEELONG – Housing, Special Economic Zone, Geelong Gallery redevelopment, Market Square transformation, key revitalisation projects, Geelong Station precinct redevelopment, and CBD truck bypass.
  • AVALON – Airline attraction, connectivity by road and rail, and employment precinct.
  • TRANSPORT – Geelong Ring Road Extension (Bellarine Link), Rapid Transport Corridor to the Surf Coast, and rail connections to Werribee, Armstrong Creek and Bannockburn.
  • REGIONAL SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE – Regional Indoor Sports & Events Centre (RISEC), Geelong Baseball Centre, Geelong Regional Tennis Centre, Regional Soccer Facility, and safe cycling link from Geelong to Torquay.

These top-tier priorities, together with regional advocacy, policy reform and community infrastructure projects, are all underpinned by strategic need, community benefit and regional impact.

If the current members of parliament accept our invitation, the Mayor would lead tours of key sites and conversations with local leaders, business owners and residents.

Deputy Mayor Eddy Kontelj

While the planning, consultation and supporting data are all on paper, we think it’s more powerful to see these projects in person and hear from the people who will benefit most.

The numbers have been crunched, the planning is in place and the community is on board. We’ve done the groundwork, now we need the commitment.

We absorb the cost of project management when delivering capital projects in-house and take responsibility for ongoing maintenance.

That means government investment goes further and continues delivering value well into the future.

With five months to go until the state election, we’re keeping Greater Geelong front of mind at a time when candidates will be making commitments.

We are ready to partner with government to deliver real outcomes for our community – so we hope for a positive response to our invitation to visit.
