Youth Council

Youth Council is an opportunity for young people from across the Greater Geelong region to have a say in the decisions that affect their lives, represent the views of young people and develop new skills.

The City of Greater Geelong Youth Council

  • is made up of 11 young people aged between 12 and 17 years old
  • provides opportunities for young people to participate and learn about civic and democratic processes and provides multiple mechanisms for Council to seek and receive advice and input from young people about youth specific issues
  • is elected in December each year and members serve a term of 12 months which commence with a series of induction sessions in January
  • meet once a month from February onwards in the City Hall Chamber to hear presentations give their input and advice to guests and discuss topics important to young people and
  • participate in the Councillor Connect Mentoring Program provide reports to Council and deliver a speech summarising the report and their advice at Council meetings. 

Meet the newly elected 2026 Youth Council

Following a competitive election period, the 2026 Youth Council was inducted at City Hall in January. Eleven young leaders, aged 13 to 17, were selected to represent the voices of young people across Greater Geelong.

2026 Youth Council Priorities

At the beginning of each term, Youth Council members identify key priority areas to guide their work and advocacy throughout the year. The 2026 Youth Council's priorities are:

1. Protecting native land, skies and waterways
2. Youth health and wellbeing
3. Economic equality and opportunity
4. Inclusivity and safety within the community

These priority areas will shape the advice, projects and initiatives the Youth Council contributes to across 2026, ensuring young people’s perspectives are reflected in Council decision making.
