Facilitated by schools, Stand Out groups provide safe, inclusive and engaging spaces for LGBTQIA+ students, students questioning their sexuality or gender identity, and their allies. 

Students involved in Stand Out groups report feeling safer, more connected and more confident challenging homophobic and transphobic behaviour. The Youth Development Unit (YDU) supports schools to establish or sustain Stand Out groups, and helps school staff strengthen support for LGBTQIA+ students through the Stand Out Community of Practice (SOCOP), which provides networking, resources, professional development and collaboration opportunities. 

Aims

• To provide a safe, inclusive and supportive space where LGBTQIA+ students can connect, share experiences and build a sense of belonging.
• To advocate for the rainbow community within the school, promote and celebrate days of significance, and raise awareness.
   

Outcomes

• A safer, more inclusive and supportive school environment for LGBTQIA+ students.
• Increased awareness and celebration of LGBTQIA+ days of significance, such as IDAHOBIT, Wear It Purple Day and Pride Month.
• Greater visibility, inclusion and sense of belonging for LGBTQIA+ students within the school community.
• A sustainable and embedded Stand Out group supported by school leadership and staff.
   

Delivery requirements

• Allocation of committed school staff to facilitate the group and support LGBTQIA+ students within the school community.
• Access to a suitable meeting space, such as a classroom, wellbeing area or meeting room, during school lunch breaks or other agreed times.
• Ongoing participation in the Stand Out Community of Practice (SOCOP) to access networking, resources, professional development and support.
• Support from school leadership to promote inclusion and help embed the Stand Out group within the school's culture and wellbeing framework.
