A major hazard facility (MHF) is an industrial site that stores, handles or processes large quantities of chemicals and dangerous goods. These facilities are an essential part of the States infrastructure, providing important products and services.
MHF must be licensed and follow strict legal requirements in order to prevent major incidents.
Geelong currently has four major hazard facilities including:
- oil refineries
- gas-processing plants, LPG facilities
- some warehouses and transport depots
All facilities must establish and implement a documented emergency safety plan. This is the primary means of ensuring the safe operation of the facility. This must be tested periodically with involvement from emergency service agencies.
MHF Incidents
While major incidents are uncommon, they do occur. You can stay informed by using the VicEmergency website or download the VicEmergency app.
If an incident occurs, the relevant emergency service will keep the public informed and provide advice on what actions nearby property owners/occupiers and the public need to do.
Following an incident, specific support may be provided to affected areas. The type of support provided will depend on the type and size of the incident.
