Kerbside numbering can provide an additional way for friends and emergency services to find your house.
Kerbside numbering
Property owners must display their street number in a position that is easily visible from the street.
They may also choose to paint their street number on the kerb in white on a black or blue background. Kerbside numbers can help visitors and emergency services find the property but are optional.
Maintaining and replacing kerb numbers is the property owner's responsibility.
Installing kerbside numbers
We have guidelines and specifications on the correct way to install your house or street number on the kerb side. Authorised contractors hold a permit to undertake this work and are bound to operate in accordance with Council standards. Permits are issued for a period of 12 months.
Please ask for a copy of the permit number and a contact name/phone number from all contractors offering to do kerb numbering. If you are not sure or they won't provide a permit number don't agree to the work.

Permits can be obtained online or at our Customer Service Centre (137-149 Mercer Street Geelong.) on presentation of current:
- Registration of Business
- ABN
- Public Liability Insurance Certificate for $10million
Permit costs
A Minor Works Within Road Reserve Permit is required to undertake kerb side numbering. Permits are valid for 12 months and are code MINW02.

If the contractor is not listed above they do not hold a current permit to work on roads within the City.
Common Questions
A property is allocated a street identification number for every 20 metres of land frontage to a roadway.
If your property frontage measures more than 20 metres, it will be allocated two (or more) street identification numbers.
While your official address will include the full range of numbers, you may display any of the street numbers in your range at the front of the property.
An example is if your property was 2-10 Smith Way, you could display 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 at the front of your property.
