Community profile

The City of Greater Geelong’s population continues to grow strongly. The estimated resident population is 295,052 as of 30 June 2025, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics

With more than 50 suburbs and townships, the population is forecast to grow to 441,984 by 2046, reflecting Geelong’s ongoing role as one of Australia’s fastest‑growing regional cities. 

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2021 Census of Population and Housing (the most recent Census data available), our largest age group, at 18.9 per cent, is parents and homebuilders (35 to 49 years of age), with young workforce (25 to 34 years of age) the next largest group at 14.1 per cent.

Old workers and pre‑retirees (50 to 59 years of age), empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69 years), and seniors (70 to 84 years of age) follow closely, at 11.9 per cent, 11.7 per cent and 11.4 per cent respectively.

Approximately 77.6 per cent of the community were born in Australia. The most common birthplaces outside Australia include the United Kingdom, India, New Zealand, the Philippines, Italy and China. Other than English, the most common languages spoken at home include Punjabi, Italian and Croatian

Couples with children made up 27.3 per cent of households, with a further 26.6 per cent being couples without children. Lone‑person households accounted for 26.5 per cent, while one‑parent families made up 10.2 per cent of households.
