Stuart Devlin was born in Geelong in 1931 and studied at The Gordon. When he was just 32 years old, he won the competition to design Australia's decimal currency coins which came into circulation in 1966.

His designs of native animals filled the whole side of each coin with the platypus making ripples on the pond, lyrebird's feathered fan and the lizard's frill creating a sense of playfulness.

Such was his success, that he went onto design coins and medals for 36 countries.

He also made trophies, trinkets, clocks and bowls from metals including gold and silver. His work was very popular, and he became goldsmith and jeweller to the Queen. 

About the Artist - Michael Cassar

Michael Cassar is also a Geelong artist. He uses paint and public spaces to create his work. The Life Underground series of 12 paintings celebrates the design work of Stuart Devlin and incorporates Michael's love of whimsy and humour.
