Bright ideas deliver even more for Grinter Reserve

Tuesday, 18th August 2026

What started as a lighting upgrade has grown into a broader boost for Grinter Reserve in Newcomb, after careful project delivery freed up funding for additional improvements across the precinct.

Local football, netball and BMX have all benefited from a $600,000 investment from the Australian Government under the Investing in Our Communities Program, and $72,486 from the City of Greater Geelong, which has allowed more action and more opportunities for tenant clubs.

Federal Member for Corangamite Libby Coker MP and Cheetham Ward Cr Melissa Cadwell joined players, volunteers and City officers on Saturday 15 August to celebrate the completion, which included:

  • new LED sports lighting and shelters on oval 2
  • upgraded LED lighting and shelters on the netball courts
  • new goal netting on oval 1
  • goal netting at the northern end of oval 2 and realignment of the goal posts
  • resurfacing and asphalting of berms on the BMX track.

In addition, new lighting for the BMX track has also been installed through the City's Community Infrastructure Grants program.

Works were completed in April 2026.

Good sporting facilities can make a real difference to whether locals get involved, stay involved and feel part of their community, and that’s exactly what we’re delivering at Grinter Reserve.

The new lighting, goal netting and player shelters will make a real difference for football and netball, helping players train and play for longer and giving volunteers and clubs better facilities to work with.

I’m particularly pleased to see the improvements to the BMX track – the new lighting and improved berms will give riders more opportunities to train and enjoy the track.

Grinter Reserve is the premier outdoor sporting precinct in Newcomb and hosts major sporting events.

For the City delivering this project and reinvesting every dollar saved back into the facilities, is a fantastic outcome.

Matt Farrow, president Newcomb Power Football Netball Club

Having modern facilities makes a huge difference – already we’ve been able to train and play later than before.

Our players and volunteers spend so much of their time here and deserve to have the lighting and infrastructure to match their commitment.

Michelle Osborn, president Geelong Thunder BMX Club

The new sports lighting has greatly extended training opportunities at the track, giving riders more flexibility to train outside of daylight hours.

The new berms have significantly reduced volunteer maintenance workload while creating a safer, more consistent riding surface for all riders.
