Free 2P parking trial concludes on 4 July

Friday, 3rd July 2026

The City of Greater Geelong will conclude its free 2P parking trial in Central Geelong from Saturday 4 July 2026, following a decision made as part of the 2026–27 Budget.

The trial was introduced to encourage visitation and support local businesses in Central Geelong.

Demand for the initiative exceeded expectations, with the trial proving highly popular among residents, workers and visitors.

However, the trial data also found that the initiative didn't stimulate economic activity in local businesses as anticipated, and visitation to Central Geelong also didn't increase as a result of the trial.

While the trial demonstrated strong community interest in free parking options, Council has made the difficult decision not to continue the program as part of its adopted budget, instead prioritising initiatives that provide direct support for local businesses, such as free alfresco dining permits.

Data gathered during the trial will now be used to help develop a comprehensive parking plan that considers the needs of residents, businesses and visitors across the municipality.

We thank the community for participating in the trial and providing feedback that will help shape future parking decisions.

Parking in Central Geelong from 6 July 2026 onwards

Under the trial, to access free parking, drivers still needed to start a parking session using a parking meter or on the mobile app.

The process for parking will be the same following the trial, but now, the correct fee will be calculated and displayed prior to the parking session starting.

Will there be a grace period on parking infringements following this change?

Whenever you park in a metered car park, it's always important to start a parking session using a parking meter or on the mobile app, and this hasn't changed.

You may appeal any penalty infringement notice you receive from the City of Greater Geelong if you believe that the infringement shouldn't have been issued.

All appeals are carefully reviewed, taking into consideration all the available information.
