Letter to the Planning Minister - Lara Waste-to-Energy proposal

The City of Greater Geelong has reiterated its opposition to the Lara waste-to-energy incinerator project, on behalf of the Greater Geelong community.

Responding to an endorsed Notice of Motion at the January Council meeting, Mayor Cr Dr Stretch Kontelj wrote to Planning Minister Sonja Kilkenny requesting the project not proceed.  The letter to the Minister, sent February 10, 2025, also seeks amendments to the Planning Scheme that would designate Council as the decision-making authority for any future waste-to-energy proposals within the City of Greater Geelong.

The City also previously wrote to the Victorian Planning Minister on Wednesday 20 September 2023 to convey community concerns regarding a planning application for a waste-to-energy facility in Lara.

An additional letter was sent to the Minister for Planning on 26 April 2024 informing that the community concerns still stood by the City's correspondence in September 2023.
