Weather Patterns and Mosquito Management
Mosquito numbers fluctuate due to environmental factors such as rainfall, wind and temperatures.
Our program aligns with the time of the year where we usually experience increased rainfall and warmer weather however La Nina and El Nino weather events play a major part in the lifecycle of the mosquito.
Dr. Cameron Webb (University of Sydney & NSW Health Pathology) explains that a La Nina weather pattern will significantly increase mosquito numbers in areas like Geelong and the Bellarine.
Lower rainfall during El Nino weather usually means lower mosquito numbers.
We will continue to monitor and treat throughout the year, and community members should still protect themselves as mosquito-borne diseases can be present even with low mosquito numbers.
