Asset Protection Permit

Before commencing any works within our infrastructure, you must obtain a permit depending on the location, size, and type of work.

What is it and why do you need it?

An Asset Protection Permit is required before beginning any demolition, construction or other building works on a property.

This permit ensures that public infrastructure – such as footpaths, roads and drains – remains protected throughout the project. It helps us maintain city assets in their existing condition prior to the commencement of works.

Any damage resulting from the works, or any existing damage that is worsened, must be repaired or reinstated by the permit holder.

Type of work it covers

An Asset Protection Permit is required for significant demolition or construction activities, including but not limited to:

  • demolition of a building (Asset Protection Permit to be obtained by the demolition contractor)
  • relocation or removal of buildings, including house removals
  • installation of swimming pools or spas (permit to be obtained by the pool company)
  • construction or removal of front or side fences that adjoin council infrastructure, that requires a Building Permit (e.g. footpaths)
  • major renovations or additions to existing structures
  • construction of new buildings (Asset Protection Permit to be obtained by the builder).

Inspection process

An Asset Protection Permit application should be submitted at least three weeks before works begin. This permit requires two, sometimes three inspections.

  • Initial inspection: Inspectors will assess the condition of the infrastructure prior to the commencement of works. The permit application automatically triggers the inspection, and no booking is required.

  • Final inspection: Once the works are complete, the applicant is responsible for requesting a final inspection. An inspector will attend the site to assess the condition of the infrastructure, and the applicant is responsible for completing any reinstatement works identified during the inspection.

If reinstatement works are identified during the inspection, the contractor undertaking those works may be required to obtain either a Works within Road Reserve Permit or Consent for Works within Road Reserve before the works can be completed.

To request a final inspection, email [email protected] and include the Asset Protection Permit number and full property address in the subject line.

PLEASE NOTE:

Although a Certificate of Occupancy has been issued, a final inspection must still be requested. Before requesting the inspection, please ensure the site has been cleared and that all site bins and temporary fencing have been removed.

Fees

A payment of $265.00 is required at the time of application.
